A Blue Screen of Death or BSOD occurs when a fatal or technical error in the Windows kernel prevents normal operation. The system locks itself to prevent further damage, and even if you see a screen full of white diagnostic text, it’s usually hard to decipher. Installing faulty or even incorrect drivers often causes BSODs, as well as faulty hard drives and corrupted system operating files. Sometimes a simple power surge can cause the podium to shut down.

    Step 1

If you understand What is a BSOD, look at the third sequence of text at the top of the screen to determine why your system has shut down or cannot boot normally. A common cause should be an “unmountable volume” which could indicate a problem with your hard drive or its associated file structure. Another common issue could be a “non-pageable page error” which could indicate corrupted data on the actual drive or bad storage items. If a specific hardware driver is indeed mentioned, so is this note.

    Step 2

Turn off the computer and unplug the power cable from the wall plate. Press and hold the power button for a few seconds to generate unnecessary motherboard power. Leave the system on for ten minutes. Smaller and sometimes larger spikes will cause a BSOD, and leaving the build for a few minutes may fix the problem.

    Step 3

Reconnect the power cord and restart your computer. Press “F8” several times until you get toin the Home screen options menu. Select “Safe Mode” and press “Enter”.
